When I was a small boy in America (we immigrated from Italy), I always watched the honeymooners and I never missed an episode. Now that I'm 45 years old and living in Italy again I've been fortunate to receive the classic 39 episodes in DVD, I have to admit it...as a small boy I allways agreed with Ralph but as I review the dvds I think that Alice (Audrey Meadows) is the real main protagonist of the whole show!!!! The secret of the success of The Honeymooners, love you Audrey your way of teaching life has positively influenced me. Mauro from Bari Italy

I was a young boy when my parents moved to Mexico City in 1951 from Los Angeles, CA.  I was only 4 years old. Then in 1956 my father bought our first TV set, of course black & white. Every weekend they would watch the "Honeymooners" (In Mexico City, channel 5 XHGC-TV at 9:00PM, every Friday) with me lying on the carpet in front of the TV set. I still remember how much I enjoyed the show and how I waited all week long to watch the Honeymooners but specially Audrey Meadows. At my short age I think I was in love with her, and it made me so mad when Ralph was rude with her Now I'm 59 and have all the episodes on DVD's, they bring such good memories and make me feel young again, now Ralph makes me laugh. I will always miss them all. Mariano Travesi 5001 Par Dr. Flower Mound TX. 75028 marianotravesi@aol.com

The honeymooners was/is the best television show I've seen. I love Audrey meadows, no one could ever replace her as Alice, she was born to play the part....I have the classic 39 and I also have all of the lost episodes, from 1952 to 1957.

"Ahhhhh, shaddup!" I just LOVE how Alice always put Ralph in his place. Audrey, "The Honeymooners" is going as strong as ever in TV reruns, enjoyed by the newer generations as well as those who saw the shows the first time around. I also came across an episode of the old "I've Got A Secret" TV show which you appeared on, and I was awestruck when you mentioned that you lived, for a brief time, in Sewickley, PA, outside of Pittsburgh, where I am from. Baby, you're still the greatest! Ditto for Art, Joyce, and of course, The Great One -- Denny Pine, Pittsburgh, PA

My dear mother passed away late October 2005. Three days after we laid our sweet mother to rest my wife left me with our two kids. Two days after she left the company I worked for had major layoffs and I was fired. A month later I was forced out of my home for being unable to pay the rent. I had to up and move to Vernal Utah to start over again. After a long and bitter divorce I am pleased to report that although I don't make much money, I have not missed a single child support payment and have not missed one visit time with my kids Aurie and Tyler who live hundreds of miles away now. My dad first introduced me to the honeymooners when I was a kid. Going through these difficult times in my life I saved up enough money to buy the classic 39 episodes. Without any hesitation I can honestly and gratefully say that those old time sitcom shows got me through it all. That’s the truth. When I didn't have a friend in the world you were there to lift my spirits when they were down in the dumps. I can't thank all of you enough for bringing laughter, character, and hope back into my life. God bless all of you and thank you for helping many down and out spirits to smile again. Sincerely, Lane Martineau 589 west 100 south vernal, Utah 84078

About 1956 or 1957 had occasion to be in Los Angeles at the hotel where The Steve Allen show was televised. Went to the show and the usher asked if I would move over one seat.  I did and a lady sat next to me.  Steve was saying that his sister-in law was in the audience and the spotlights shone right at me, not realizing that Audrey was sitting next to me. WOW what a thrill! Always watched the HONEYMOONERS.  She was great, I miss her. Barb from Iowa

I have very fond memories of Miss Meadows. I lived in Va. when I was a young girl. Miss Meadows had beautiful house and horses on her property. I would walk by her house and she would let me feed the horse. She was also very generous at Halloween. I had no idea who she was, just that she was a very friendly lady with a horse. I am a relatively new Honeymooners fan although I have been a fan of Audrey's since seeing her in Too Close for Comfort. She was terrific as Alice in the Honeymooners. She and Art Carney were the true stars of the show. They both did the impossible; they held their own against Jackie Gleason. Audrey is one of the best female TV comedians ever. She is not mentioned in the same level as Lucille Ball or Mary Tyler Moore but she belongs right up there with them!

Having been a Honeymooners fan for many years, it's always been clear to me that Audrey Meadows and Art Carney were the two stars of that show.  Jackie Gleason's real genius was in recognizing their talent. Miss Meadows is, and always will be one of the greats of American comedy.

I was just a kid when the Honeymooners became a regular part of our Saturday night. It was one of my favorite TV shows and I hardly ever missed it. I still watch it today (I have VHS of the shows and also watch it on TV when it is on). It is timeless and I never get tired of watching it. Audrey was one of my favorite stars during the 50's. I remember her being on shows like “What's My Line” and “Name's the Same.” I had the good fortune to meet her after I grew up during a promotion of her book "Love Alice" she autographed it for my wife and me. It is one of my prized possessions. You will always be the greatest, Audrey. Doug Stephens, Tennessee

I am fortunate to live in the same apartment home that Audrey Meadows and her husband lived in Denver, Colorado for approximately 14 years in the early 70's. My understanding from neighbors who knew her (here) is that she loved Denver and was active in our community. Because of this, I wonder if she doesn't "visit" her old home. (I am only the 2nd resident to live here after she moved.) Occasionally, I smell the aroma of an unidentifiable perfume wafting through my home. No, I'm not crazy because guests have inquired about the fragrance. To tribute Audrey, I display in my home a great photo of her and her sister, Jayne. I'm just sorry that I was not a neighbor to her during her stay in Denver in the early 70's... Dawn H., Denver, CO

I bought the Classic 39 episodes on DVD a few months back. One night with our 14 year son's homework done I put on Disk 1. My boy was hooked. Now it's an episode every night. I plan on picking up the Lost Episodes next. How refreshing to see him laugh at the shows that I laughed at. I am 54 so I was probably watching re-runs from the late 50's or early 60's. Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler, eat your hearts out. This was comedy with no vulgarity, flatulation jokes, etc. This was great TV. Ken from Pittsburgh, PA.

We've recently rented, through Netflix, the complete Honeymooners set. Although I remember watching the Honeymooners as a child, and have seen an episode here and there throughout the years, I could never be counted as a "fan," which means I never appreciated the show's finer points. Now, we've been watching the show over several nights, seeing multiple episodes in one sitting. The first thing that has struck me is how I could have missed appreciating just how beautiful Miss Meadows was, and just how much light she brought to the Honeymooners set. The other thing that struck me is just how much Ralph Kramden's raging reminds me of my own father when I was a small child, which was about the same time the 39 Honeymooners episodes were made, 1955-56. Unfortunately, my mother, much as I love her, nevertheless, lacked Alice's toughness and backbone. I remember reading the newspaper accounts of Miss Meadows' passing, so I have been well aware during our foray into the Honeymooners collection that she is no longer with us. I find that as I now watch the show, I'm experiencing a sadness or even delayed mourning that such shining beauty is, in fact, gone from our midst forever. Thank you for maintaining this website, and providing me an opportunity to share my thoughts and emotions about this lady, whose radiation, through the miracle of technology, will continue on through time. My uncle recently passed away. Prior to his death he gave me his copy of your book, Love, Alice. I noticed on the fly leaf that you had signed the book, during your book signing tour. I called my aunt and she had forgotten he had met you and brought the book home as a gift. I am returning the book to her since I just finished reading it. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I was only eight years old, but I still remember watching the show the Honeymooners. This show and others in the 50's lead to fond memories for us early baby boomers that were lucky enough to have a television at home. I am glad these classic shows have been made available on cable television for the enjoyment and entertainment of my grandchildren. We have the classic on DVD and we watch it over and over again. I pastor a church and sometimes there is a lot of stress but for me to laugh at the Honeymooners helps to relax me. The sad part is that they do not make good wholesome and clean shows anymore. I never watch the sit-coms at all because to me they are not funny, not realistic and not clean. Audrey Meadows and Jayne Meadows were two of the all time most beautiful, entertaining and intelligent women ever to appear on television. Incidentally, the biography of Audrey Meadows should be modified to say that although most people were of the impression that Audrey was born in China as was Jayne, in fact Audrey was born in New York when her missionary parents took a break from their missionary work to return to America. That information is relayed to a listening public by Jayne Meadows in her recent (November 3, 2004) radio interview with Jim Benson, of World Talk Radio. tdruja

Athens, Ga. — Within its massive collection of radio and television programs, staff in the Peabody Awards Archive at the University of Georgia has discovered a new “lost episode” of the acclaimed television comedy “The Honeymooners.” “The episode we have, titled ‘Love Letter,’ originally aired on Oct. 16, 1954, on “The Jackie Gleason Show. It does not exist in another archive and is a unique ‘lost’ episode in ‘The Honeymooners’ history,” said Ruta Abolins, director of the Peabody Awards Collection and Media Archives at UGA. Gleason, who won a Personal Peabody Award in 1955, introduced “The Honeymooners” on Oct. 5, 1951, during his first variety series, “Cavalcade of Stars,” broadcast live on the DuMont Television Network. From 1952 to 1955 “The Jackie Gleason Show” ran on CBS where the live sketches grew from 10 to 30 minutes in length. “The Honeymooners” also ran as a CBS situation comedy in the 1955-56 season, and “The Jackie Gleason Show” returned as a variety program in the 1956-57 season. A re-performance of “Love Letter” aired in Gleason’s 1956-57 series, but the Peabody Awards Archive holds the only known copy of the original sketch from the earlier variety show. “I discovered just how special the program is during a preservation review of the Peabody kinescopes and videotapes,” explained archivist Margaret Compton. “When I contacted Jackie Gleason Enterprises they were very excited to find that this particular kinescope still exists in such good condition since their only copy is of the later sketch. We have learned that Gleason Enterprises does intend to release this never-rebroadcast episode through MPI Home Video.” (Visit www.mpihomevideo.com for more information.) The Peabody Awards Archive at the University of Georgia Libraries holds more than 40,000 titles, with radio programs dating from 1940 and television from 1948. It reflects the most outstanding works in American broadcasting history, with titles from news, documentary, entertainment, educational, children’s and public service programming. “We are truly fortunate to hold and preserve this great collection at the University of Georgia,” said Horace Newcomb, Peabody Awards director. “Many people do not realize that it is an archive of all the entrants for Peabody Awards as well as Peabody Award winners. Our media archivists are constantly discovering rare and important materials in the library’s vaults.” The Peabody Awards, established in 1940 and administered by UGA’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, are the oldest honor in electronic media. Hi from Texas. My grandmother always told us that she was related to the "Meadows" sisters - Jayne and Audrey. My grandmother was a "Cotter" from central West Virginia. She was born in 1900 a daughter of Cornelious Cotter and Harriet Linger Cotter. I'm looking for some "Cotter" family reunions! From a fan and (I think) a distant cousin or something. I just saw an old episode of the Simpson’s and saw her name at the end of the credits. She was Homer's dad's girlfriend. I then remember seeing that episode when it came out. Although I'm still under 40, I always loved her role on the Honeymooners. It was always nice watching the show on syndication with my mom, dad and brother when I was a young'n. My book is packed away so I don't know the exact date but I read in a Dallas paper that Audrey was to appear at a Dallas bookstore signing her copies of a book about the Honeymooners. I closed my office at 5 PM and drove 150 miles to the location in Dallas where her book signing was being held. I purchased her book and got in line for the signing. She was indeed more beautiful than any screen could convey. When she signed my book we chatted for a moment and she said “you came 150 miles for my signature?" Her humility was overwhelmingly genuine. She just was the essence of grace and sweetness. She did then and does to this day convey to me one of the last of a dying breed of ladies (anyone can be a woman, she was a lady) who have the wholesome quality of breeding and gentility. She passed away not too long after I received her signed book. That was the nicest 300 miles I ever spent in my life. Her physical beauty was glorious. Her spiritual beauty was devastating. I remember the Honeymooners from the mid-50's. I hope they'll be around on re-runs. And hey, the '50's weren't THAT long ago. Just as soon as I think the WWII generation has completely faded into the past, I'm reminded that the powerful Alan Greenspan is 77 years old, Chief Justice Rehnquist is 79, Justice Stevens is 86 and won't retire, the Pope is 83, and Bob Dole is 80 and an active commentator. There are still plenty of active people around who were well into their careers during the '50's...RL, Ga.

I would like to know more about Audrey's early life as a child of missionaries and how it influenced her later choices. She was musically trained. Where, and at what age, did her music training begin? Was she the younger sister of Jayne? She was such an unassuming talent. What illnesses was she dealing with at her death? It was good to read about her other credits other than The Honeymooners.

As Alice Kramdon, Audrey Meadows played a pretty, sharp-tongued every woman. Ralph and Alice were good, blue collar family folk. They loved their friends and enjoyed a good joke, and sometimes made fools of themselves. I particularly like Alice's approach to housework. She was so conscientious, but Ralph rarely noticed. Alice really made the best of that substandard, high rise flat. DN, Brunswick, Ga.

Great website. As Alice Kramden, Audrey Meadows was a sharp-tongued everywoman. The Kramden's were decent, blue collar family folks. In the 50's, Alice represented millions of American housewives who lived in substandard high-rise apartments and struggled to pay their bills---sort of the same thing we have today. The more things change, the more they stay the same. DN, Brunswick, Georgia.

This web site is great, but could use more pictures of the Honeymooner's set...that sparse kitchen and dining room reminds me of my grandmother's house upstairs. There are still many upstairs apartments in old Victorian houses that pretty much resemble Ralph and Alice's kitchen. Audrey Meadows played the role of Alice so well...she really took Ralph on when he needed it. They were so funny. They represented common folks, where most of us are.

I rediscovered Audrey Meadows when I read Art Carney's obituary a couple of weeks ago. Audrey Meadows was so beautiful and funny. She really livened up the upstairs blue collar flat that she and Ralph shared during the 50's. Remember that old fashioned sink and the plain kitchen table? She represented millions of Americans who lived in similar arrangements. I did not realize that she died in 1996 a few days before her 70th birthday, and that she had a nasty cigarette habit. I can't imagine her smoking...it just seems unfair...it's reassuring to know that Joyce Randolph (Ed's wife Trixie) is alive and kickin' at 78 years old, and I hear she's doing well. I remember Trixie being Alice's friend, but she was never the main character. I suppose she's the last of the Honeymooner's...but the Honeymooner's will live on in reruns for years to come. So I am one of the younger generations (I'm 25 now) who grew up watching The Honeymooners at 11:30 at night on channel 11 in New York, when I was much too young to be staying up that late on a school night, especially in the second grade! It didn't matter- busting a gut laughing was worth the missed sleep. I scrolled down and read all of your amazing entries. I find it fascinating that I am in the same company as someone who was President of Audrey's fan club in the 1950's. Or a paper boy who had her parents on his route in Connecticut. This is truly a time capsule for me. I also find it amazing that in a time like now, when we are flooded with beautiful celebrities, and everyone is a Britney Spears or Jennifer Lopez look-alike, that people are still impressed with the beauty of an actress from years ago. And not just a few people! Nearly everyone who signed this guestbook has commented on how beautiful this woman was. THAT is an immeasurable impact. When I was a little girl, "Alice" was my hero. Other kids were into cartoons, but I had a fondness for a lady that could tell off her husband! :) I remember some years ago, back in the 80's, that my older cousin told me he had bumped into Audrey Meadows in the street in Manhattan. He said she was so nice to him, and took a picture and gave him an autograph. I was jealous! My jerky cousin got to meet "Alice" in person and I didn't! Years later, when I was in college, I cried to learn that she had passed away, because I never got my chance to meet my "hero". What I do have is every piece of memorabilia I ever collected. My program from the Honeymooners convention I went to (I was the only 8 year old there) among other things. Thanks for keeping this site going. It is really nice to have. And to all you girls named "Audrey" after this great actress...I want you to know that name is my first pick when I have a daughter of my own! ;) Love, Rosanna NY dababel@aol.com

Audrey Meadows and Continental Airlines-- Did you know that Audrey's brother, G. Edward Cotter was considered at one time to be the successor to Audrey's husband Robert F. Six? Or that Audrey played a part in furnishing the Boeing 747s that Continental briefly operated in the early 1970s? For more info about Audrey at Continental in the early 1970s, don't miss Robert Serling's book about Robert Six and Continental Airlines, which came out around 1970s or thereabouts. Although somewhat rose-colored, it's a fine portrait of an airline before it was wrecked by deregulation and Frank Lorenzo. (For more information about that nightmare, don't miss Thomas Petzinger's book HARD LANDING and Gordon Bethune's book on how he turned Continental around after Lorenzo left.)

Audrey Meadows is my favorite comedian and will always be the best there ever was! She has always been someone to enjoy as a woman just in a regular old apron. I, being a woman who loves comedy, has always enjoyed her because not only do you get to see her as the straight man in "The Honeymooners" but you can also see her throwing the punch lines in sketches with Red Skelton or movies like "That Touch of Mink". She was gorgeous and funny, she pretty much perfect. She is a legend on the top of my list. I'm only 17! She's hit a new generation. Maybe not with a bang but I will soon change that! Audrey you’re the best!

Audrey was a frequent to various horse shows & steeplechase races in & around Loudon & Fauquier counties in northern Virginia during the 1950s. I have a wonderful 8x10 photo of her presenting an award to our employer & a horse rider from that era.

Hello Audrey, I loved the Honey mooners and Too close for comfort. Jackie and Ted both are living legends even after death. You are one great actress, it is no wonder why they were successful. @ other favorites of mine were Ronald Reagan and Alfred Hitchcock. Amazing, you must be proud of your accomplishments. I absolutely admire the work of Audrey Meadows...her wit, her beauty, her love to laugh and give smiles to her audiences...I remember watching "The Honeymooners" when my parents introduced the show to me, and have been a fan ever since...there just aren't any shows that can capture the innocence of such a great and wonderful time...even those such as Dennis the Menace, Donna Reed, Mr. Ed, My Three sons were able to...I might only be 23 ;) but these shows, their reruns:) have been a part of my life ever since I was around 5-ish...but the Honeymooners will forever be one of my favorites...Alice, you're the greatest, and will forever be missed and remembered...Sincerely, Traci Schmidtberger

At the current age of 42, I still search for episodes of the Honeymooners on television. I try to catch the show every time it comes on, be it noon or 3:00 a.m. In my opinion, Ms Meadows made the show. Along with her wit, she was so beautiful, simply gorgeous. I had a crush on her then and still find myself focusing on her beauty 50 years later. The industry talks about beautiful female legends, no one else in history has come close. She really was 'THE GREATEST'!!!!!!!!! Kc

I love the episode where she lets Ralph know just how much "fun" she has cleaning and keeping the fort together everyday. She is just sooooooo funny. She also proved one very important thing with the character of Alice: true class has no boundaries. Thank you, Miss Meadows. We will love you forever.

She was special. That must be the reason that I have watched her from about the age of 12 to today (57) when there is a Honeymooners rerun on.

And so was Jane. How did so much talent and wisdom come to reside within two offspring? I would like to know more about their parents (other than that they were missionaries living in China).

The explanation for Steve Allen's talent(s) is somewhat easy to explain, but what was it about Jane and Audrey's development that created to very unusual people?  I hope you have time to point me to a source of my query. Joe (kspence@bellsouth.net) or 704-376-3682

I just want to say a few things about Audrey. #1 In the 1950's she was surely the sexiest woman alive. So many people go for the obvious, such as Monroe, and Grace Kelly, etc. Audrey was truly sexy and extremely talented as well. What a woman!

I have checked out Steve Allen's site many times, always good to see new things, but was so very glad to find this site, dedicated to Audrey, she was such a talent, and a loss to all of us, the same with the passing of Steve, we need to thank Miss Jayne Meadows and their children for carrying on the memories of both of them, I have always thought that Audrey was so very pretty and always turned in a great performance on whatever she done, her passing is a loss for all of TV land, but her work will live forever, thank you so very much for all you have done and the laughs that you have supplied, over the years, if anyone deserves credit for the success of the honeymooners, besides the great one, it would be Audrey, IE: just watch the older versions, or the later shows without her. Thank you again. Herbie Hancock Broadcast Legend herbiehancock1@aol.com

Audrey Meadows is a reason to live, to not lose hope, and to never lose faith in God. Besides being a brilliant actress, she was a formidable thinker as well. She is a true inspiration. She found a place in my heart and captured my imagination when I first saw her on the Honeymooners when I was five years old. To this day, I never tire of seeing her perform.

Audrey was the ideal I used to judge a woman's beauty, humor and attitude. She was to me the most wonderful looking woman. And her wisdom, even when acting, is something to behold and admire. She was not flawless, she was human, and she made it easy for many people to see the good side of being just ourselves.

I also enjoyed the Honeymooners. I thought the Cast worked perfectly together. When Ralph told Alice that he was going to send her to the moon and she just stood there like "we'll see about that Buddy". I thought this was real funny and it got lots of laugh. Sincerely, Carolyn L. Mullis

Obviously, Audrey Meadows was one of the true first comedians of television. Selecting a specific memory of Ms. Meadows would be very difficult, however, who can ever forget how SHE was the true backbone of the Kramden's relationship.

I was fascinated to learn the story of her audition for the part of Alice. Originally turned down because of her beauty, Ms. Meadows returned for another audition "dressed as she viewed Alice", and was immediately awarded the part.

Audrey Meadows.....A Beautiful woman and great actress, who has provided laughs to millions for many years!

As I slog through industry red tape trying to piece together my own career, I took great inspiration from Audrey's book "Love, Alice".

Aside from reading 3 other bios on Jackie and viewing "The Honeymooners" and "American Scene Magazine" first run, not to mention "Requiem For A Heavyweight" and my favorite "Soldier In The Rain", I finally feel that I've heard someone who REALLY knew him. Dare I say it???:

There should be more information on her life prior to, during, and after her life as a honeymooner. There should also be available complete list of books that were written about the actress, along with the names and years of all the movies, TV shows and appearances she had in her career as an actress. More pictures would be a nice touch also. I think Audrey Meadows was one of the most beautiful women to grace television and the movie industry. What a lady.

Actually, although the imdb says that Audrey was born in '22, People Magazine (and most other sources) say '26... as did the Inside TV Land special... so I really can't say... I think her grave says '26 also...

I am a new (Only because I'm 14), but very dedicated fan of Audrey Meadows and I was so pleased to see that someone has made a website for her. Only one thing- You said in her biography that she died at age 69- However, she was born in 1922 and died in 1996, 5 days before her 74th birthday. Correct me if I'm wrong- I'm no math wiz, but I think that's 74 years. Other than that one, tiny flaw- this site is absolutely wonderful! Or as Audrey would say- "Wondahful". :) Keep up the fabulous work!
